About Me

  • Hello you. I'm a 38-year old MSc student, studying Advanced Computer Science at Sussex University. I'm especially interested in Internet and mobile software, sensors and pervasive computing, user interfaces, and the process of developing great software.

Before that I spent 11 years running Future Platforms, a software company I co-founded which makes lovely things for mobile phones, and which I sold to Vexed Digital in 2011.

I read a lot, write here, and practice Aikido and airsoft. I live in Brighton, a seaside town on the south coast of the UK, with two cats and a clown.

You got all those nice policemen to sign model release forms, right?

Tom Hume

Sure. Did you remember to CC 95% of the folks who use flickr on that comment? I think they might find it helpful.

Dave Ph

Sorry, I was trying to make the point that when objecting to privacy invasion by the police, you lose some of the moral high ground by displaying pictures of the police.

As I understand it, you can demand any recognisable image created of your face is removed if you are the only individual captured, if there are more than three people in shot it considered legal to act without model release. Since you're photgraphing agents of the law, I'd imagine it wise to ensure you are beyond reproach.

And sorry for trying to do so in a witty, light-hearted way.

1. I'm not taking the moral high ground. It's cold and lonely up there and I can't be bothered to walk that far.

2. I don't see why the privacy rights of the police should be worthy of more care and consideration than those of ordinary citizens (no offence intended to any policemen reading). I guess that's one of the points I'm making.

3. Via email it's hard to determine the difference between witty and snide. It's a lesson that you and I have both learned the hard way, several times :(

1. Okay fair enough.

2. No, I wasn't suggesting that, I was suggesting that you cover your own ass.

3. Indeed

4. :-)

But imagine the faces of the coppers as you hand over the forms with a polite not for them to fill them in and post them. But maybe that's just me. Excessive politeness and coutesy in the face of ludicrous measures can only serve to highlight the ludicrousness. I guess rather than taking photos to protest, I would be inclined to display an inane grin every time I pass the van. After all, it's an instruction vfrom the Police - shouldn't you be obeying that instruction?

Tom Hume

Carrying consent forms around with me? Far too much effort...

Like the inane grin idea though... consider it adopted :)

When i showed my housemate the lovely picture you have of him guiding the procession, he said "Wikid, i'm famous". I'm not sure he would understand what a model release form was, so don't worry too much....
