In a panel discussion about Internet addiction. Rather sheepishly blogging this.
Not sure I like the term "addiction"... many of the examples given are driven by expectations. A stockbroker who checks his email 24/7 because the markets don't sleep isn't necessarily addicted, he's just meeting the expectations of others... in the way that, say, a drug or alcohol addict isn't.
I like the way you put that. Sometimes I need to spend a lot of time online, and some people just don't understand that and think I'm unnecessarily online. Truth is, I'd love to leave the screen behind sometimes, but for that can be like walking out of one's job in the middle of their shift just because they're sick of being at work that day.
