Swedish Beers

Yay, Swedish Beers reasserts itself my favourite mobile networking event... principally because it's a group of nice interesting folk getting hammered in a half-decent bar, and doesn't suffer too much from the press-release-reciting puffery that some other events tend towards.

Had a great time at Nordic Bar last night, mob-handed with Devi and Ribot of FP (if you can call 3 a mob). It was great to catch up with a few folks I'd not seen for a while - Helen, Mike, Nick, Steve and Simon - and meet a few new faces (Oleg and the mighty Masabists).

Thanks to the obsessive photography of Mr Ribot, the evening is well documented. I'm assured that footage will follow.

And big wooo to Helen for organising it all!

MyNuMo: user-generated ringtones and more...

MyNuMo Beta Launch - Mobile Personal and Social Media Marketplace: "Newly launched on Cingular's network and going live on T-mobile USA next week MyNuMo provides a marketplace for anyone to create content and sell their, ringtone, .wallpaper, text or video content to everyone else."

Interesting idea - and not the first create-your-own-ringtone service, I'm sure. But how does MyNuMo work with the owners of rights? I'd bet that most popular ringtones are based on music from the charts - or at least music written by someone other than the owner of the ringtone. The publishing and performance rights for these sounds are owned by record labels, no? In which case how will they react when music purchasers start recording their own CDs and making their own ringtones, cutting out the label?

As Jon Davis of BMG said a while back: "People will just take the CDs they buy from Woolworths, rip them to MP3 and transfer them to their devices. For the handset to then pop up a text offering to convert it to a ringtone is a real danger.'"

Can I Crash?

Sony Ericsson announces eighth Walkman phone

Sony Ericsson announces eighth Walkman phone: "Sony Ericsson today Liberacéd up its Walkman music phone line, adding a new W700 candybar model kitted out in a "titanium gold"-coloured casing"

I've just crossed over to the dark side, swapping my Nokia N70 for a Sony Ericsson K750i - and I have to say I'm mightily impressed. The form factor is way superior, it's lighter, battery life is significantly better (though it's GPRS as opposed to 3G), and the real killer... it actually syncs with my Mac. The N70 had started dropping contacts, losing them, failing to sync calendars, and so on.

I was also pleasantly surprised to find some solid UI improvements over Nokia, particularly in choosing destinations for text messages, handling missed calls, and so on. So 3 days in I've no regrets; I suspect there'll be some native Symbian apps I miss one day, but not yet...

Update: battery life on this thing is very impressive. I've just had 4.5 days of usage out of it before needing a recharge...
