Art on mobile
December 21, 2004 | CommentsSK Telecom are sponsoring art for mobiles, letting users download and display masterpieces as wallpapers.
This seems to be an area which has been massively under-exploited to date; we've been in vague discussion with a client to try and get them doing something along these lines (and then heading off in a slightly different direction, of course ;)).
No-one "owns" art on mobile, in the way that various companies are trying to "own" gaming, or music.

Software patents
December 20, 2004 | CommentsOn the way between class and our traditional Sunday evening takeaway, I was talking to Steve last night about the campaign against software patents. I was vaguely aware of it but hadn't really heard much fuss in the press (compared, say, to the anti-ID cards activism).
It sounds really scary. As I understand it, broad patents will allow large software companies to form cartels, in which each member cross-licenses IP to the others and thereby keep smaller organisations from innovating. Even the threat of legal action would frequently be enough to cause individuals or organisations to stop what they're doing (as we know from the music industry).
It's like interconnect fees for ideas. Bad stuff.
SMS replies to MMS
December 20, 2004 | CommentsAha! Just noticed that Nokia have fixed one of my big gripes in the 7610... you can reply to an MMS by sending back a text message easily.
Up until now I've continually found myself receiving a picture message then having to exit, go back to messaging and compose a text - really annoying. I had quite cynically thought this might be a way to deliberately bump up MMS revenues - and am glad to be proved wrong :)
